HYDRATION AND ELECTROLYTE TIPS

Yea! More sunshine means more outside activities!  But with all the marketing of sports drinks are you ever confused or paranoid about how much to drink and if you’re getting enough electrolytes?  Unless your’e an ultra-endurance athlete or its scorching hot, chances are you’re fine with just water during an activity.  Further, you should avoid most commercial sports drinks in general as the amount of sugars is 2-3 times too high for optimal absorption or necessity.  Here’s a simple guideline for hydration and electrolytes based on amount of activity:

  • Up to 30-45 minutes: Water during workout is fine, but not necessary. Electrolytes are easily and readily replenished with food.
  • 45 minutes – 2 hours: drink water in spurts during activity. Electrolytes replenished with food following activity.
  • Over 2 hours: Drink water throughout activity. Replenish a mix of electrolytes and glucose w/ tabs, powders, or diluted sports drinks/water at appropriate intervals.

These guidelines do shift with extreme temperatures or high levels of exertion.  But for 90% of us, water after or during activity is sufficient!

Recovery session one day AFTER a soccer game. ⚽️

Goal is to reduce tension in soft tissues and mobilize restricted areas that arise during competition/performance, restoring healthy movement patterns going into the next training & game cycle.🏃‍♀️

Started off with 30 min of manual therapy to release tight hip flexors (#psoasrelease) and quads as well as chiropractic adjustment to help loosen up a locked up lower back. 

Second-half of the appointment included 30 min of more traditional massage work to relax & release full-body tension that occurs as a result of physical play going up against other players and impact from running up and down the field.

This is what injury prevention looks like for a 40-something soccer player who likes to train hard (sprint intervals and heavy-ish weights 3-4/wk) in between games and has a history of partial quad, hamstring and calf tears.

Chiropractic care with @drpaulmolina about 2 hours after a hard training session includes:

🙌🏽 Soft tissue mobilization/ manual therapy to release tension throughout the muscle and fascia in the overworked areas like hip flexors, glutes, hamstrings, quads, and calves.

💪 Chiropractic adjustments to improve mobility of hips and spine joint to allow for better mechanics.

🙆‍♀️ PT exercises for homework to offset the regular wear and tear.

Staying active and injury-free requires a concerted effort but so worth it! No injuries this soccer season!
