IPL Photofacials and Laser Hair Removal, perfect treatments for Winter

By FoRM Health | November 27, 2024

While many people may be mourning the loss of daylight and grumbling about the colder, wetter temps, the laser enthusiasts at FoRM Health PDX in Portland, Oregon, embrace the next 6 months! Why? Well it’s the opening of “laser season,” specifically aesthetic procedures, such as Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and Laser Hair Removal (LHR).

These aesthetic procedures have been around forever and generate some pretty great aesthetic results!

What light-based aesthetic procedures does FoRM offer and how do they work?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is an effective and fast-acting procedure for those looking for a brighter, glowing and more even complexion. IPL uses a broad spectrum of light that targets varied pigmentation within the skin, including redness (erythema), brown discoloration (hyperpigmentation from increased melanin deposition) and enlarged blood vessels (capillaries) within the skin. The “intense light” of IPL is able to breakdown the concentrated deposition of melanin (dark pigmentation) and/or hemoglobin (red pigmentation) which cause the skin discoloration and uneven complexion. Another bonus effect of IPL is that it is both anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial (along with other unwanted organisms like skin-mites), making it an excellent therapy for acne reduction. Rosacea is another chronic skin condition that can benefit from IPL.

Laser Hair Removal (LHR) provides a permanent solution for unwanted facial and body hair, resulting in significant reduction in hair coarseness and count in any treatment area. Many of those who receive LHR rarely have to shave or wax again! LHR works by targeting the melanin present in your hair follicles with with a strong emittance of light energy.  The melanin within the follicle absorbs the light, which gets converted to heat, and the heat damages the hair follicle (root of the hair). The specific wavelength of light used in LHR is refined enough to target the dense pigmentation in the hair follicle without damaging the surrounding skin.

So why are these procedures best performed in the Winter (for Portland, Oregon, that means Nov through May!)?

Light-based therapies like IPL and LHR are most effective and safest when performed on an untanned area because there is less pigmentation throughout the skin.  This creates a better contrast between the pigmented target (ie hair follicle or skin discoloration) and normal skin, which allows for a more precise treatment (safer), better results (more effective) and makes the treatment more comfortable overall. Additionally, during the winter months there is less risk of sun exposure AFTER the session, so post-treatment care—like avoiding direct sunlight and using sunscreen—is easier to manage, ensuring optimal outcomes and minimizing risks.

Starting these treatments in winter yields best results, a safer treatment and allows your skin to be ready and radiant for late spring and summer!

Maximizing Your Results with Light-Based Therapies

Before you kick off your laser or light-based journey, here are the steps to take to maximize results and ensure a safe treatment. Follow these tips to ensure your skin and hair respond beautifully:

  • Protect Your Skin from Sun Exposure: Avoid tanning or prolonged sun exposure at least two weeks before and after treatment. Be diligent with UV protection, using SPF 50+ SPF, before or after your treatment if you plan on traveling to a sunny destination.
  • Skip Waxing and Plucking: Refrain from removing hair by the root for at least four weeks before Laser Hair Removal. Shaving, however, is absolutely fine and required before each treatment.
  • Follow Post-Treatment Care: Avoid harsh topicals (ie acids or exfoliants) and use soothing products as directed after each session. In addition, excessive heat such as hot baths, saunas, or exercise that causes sweating should be avoided for 24–48 hours post-treatment.
  • Be Patient: Results develop over multiple sessions—stick to a monthly schedule for best outcomes! LHR often requires 6+ sessions as it is most effective on hair that is in the growth stage (which is approximately 30% of hair in any given area). With repeated treatments, hair grows back finer and lighter—or stops growing altogether! While one session of IPL can generate immediate results, most people are happiest when they complete a series of 3+ IPL sessions which address the deeper layers of sun damage and inflammation that are often present.
  • Communicate with Your Provider: Please let us know about any medications or topicals you are taking that make your skin more sensitive to light. Specifically, retinols, oral isotretinoin (ie Accutane) and antibiotics, should be avoided for a period of time prior to your treatment. Please ask your provider about this during your consultation!

These simple steps will help you achieve glowing, smooth results while keeping your skin safe and healthy!

We all have a goal of best metabolic health, right We all have a goal of best metabolic health, right?! Well it’s time to work smarter not harder 💪 🧠 🔥

Sprinting + HIIT are powerful tools for metabolic health:

⚡️ Improve insulin sensitivity (your cells use glucose more efficiently)
⚡️ Stimulate mitochondrial repair (better energy production)
⚡️ Preserve & build lean muscle, which supports a higher resting metabolism (your basal metabolic rate)
⚡️ Create an “afterburn” effect (increased calorie burn after the workout)

Our nutritionist also uses sprints + high intensity interval training for conditioning in tennis, backpacking, & dancing! 🪩 🎾 🪩

If you’re just starting — this doesn’t mean going all-out on day one. Begin with short intervals, moderate effort, & plenty of recovery.

We also don’t need & shouldn’t do HIIT everyday!
2x per week is a sweet spot & you can get so much done in 10-20mins

& yes, longer forms of cardio like walking is super important for overall health too! Or long runs if you love to run but ROI for our metabolism really shines with HIIT. ⭐️

The goal isn’t maximum effort every day — it’s using intensity to our advantage!

Reframe weight loss in 2026. The goal isn’t a smal Reframe weight loss in 2026.
The goal isn’t a smaller number on the scale — it’s more muscle.

Building and preserving lean muscle is the foundation of long-term strength, metabolic health, and resilience. The real win? Improving body composition: less body fat, more muscle.

Here’s where to focus 👇
• Strength train (prioritize lower body): 2–4x/week
• Move more overall: aim for ~8,000 steps/day
• Fuel muscle growth: eat about ~1.5 g protein/kg of goal body weight daily

If you’re doing the work and still not seeing results, targeted supplements and (when appropriate) medications can provide additional support.

Here’s why Dr. Kai loves lower body strength-train Here’s why Dr. Kai loves lower body strength-training🤓

In women, muscle mass and strength begins a slow decline in our 30s, accelerates through menopause transition and—if ignored—can lead to frailty later in life.

The importance of muscle mass + maintaining strength extends beyond our musculoskeletal system, as lean muscle mass also plays critical roles in immune function, cardiovascular health, and blood sugar regulation. Less muscle = poorer glucose control, higher risk for diabetes, cognitive decline + heart disease.

Fighting the good fight to fend off frailty is best to start early (think 30’s, early 40’s) when hormones are still working for you, though it’s really never too late to start. Building muscle helps protect us from falls, injuries, vulnerability + eventual loss of independence.

This is why lower body training is extremely important. Your glutes, quads, and hamstrings are your largest + most metabolically active muscle groups (+ they’re the first muscles to weaken in menopause) — they protect your joints, stabilize your spine, maintain your metabolism + keep you resilient + protected in your own body.

Dr. Kai’s go-to lower body exercises 🏋️‍♀️

🔥 Deadlifts
🔥 Squats
🔥 Hip bridges / hip thrusts

These compound movements recruit multiple muscle groups at once (abs, back, upper body), build strength for the real-world, and deliver the biggest return on investment.

Tips for success 👇
Lift moderate to heavy to build muscle
Aim for muscle fatigue with 8-10 reps, 2-3 sets/ exercise
Train lower body at least twice/week

Plan for the future - Lean into lower body training today!

Muscle matters — at every decade of life. 💪✨
But a Muscle matters — at every decade of life. 💪✨
But as we age, it becomes non-negotiable.

Here’s why prioritizing muscle is one of the most powerful health decisions you can make:

🔹 Injury prevention + joint support
Strong muscles stabilize + protect joints, adds integrity to our physical framework, reduce injury risk + help with injury rehabilitation - muscle is key to resiliency + recovery!

🔹 Weight management + blood sugar control
Muscle is metabolically active tissue. Healthier muscle means better insulin function, steadier blood sugar, easier to manage weight, and meaningful protection against our most common chronic diseases — including heart disease, dementia, obesity, and diabetes.

That’s why improving body composition matters more than chasing the scale: the real goal is building muscle while reducing visceral (abdominal) fat.

🔹 Preventing rapid muscle loss (sarcopenia)
During the menopause transition, declining hormones (mostly estrogen, testosterone and DHEA) accelerate muscle loss. Maintaining and building lean muscle helps preserve strength, bone density + keep us from fading away.

At FoRM, we don’t chase quick fixes — we build resilient bodies that age well. Strength training, nutrition, hormone support, and recovery all matter.

Muscle isn’t just about looking good. It’s about choosing to thrive rather than survive!

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be taking a deeper dive into the many benefits of muscle. Stay-tuned 🎧
