PRF vs PRP: Why FoRM made the switch to PRF for Aesthetic Procedures

By FoRM Health | October 18, 2024

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) and Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) have become increasingly popular in the world of aesthetic treatments for their natural approach to skin rejuvenation and hair restoration. Both use platelets and other components derived from your own blood to stimulate healing and collagen production, but they have key differences that impact their effectiveness and the results they deliver. Let’s dive into the top 4 differences between PRF and PRP to help you understand why weโ€™ve made the switch to PRF for our aesthetic procedures.

1. Processing + Solution Composition:

  • PRF: Platelet-Rich Fibrin is processed at a lower speed, allowing more of the white blood cells, stem cells, and fibrin matrix to remain. The slower spin creates a solution with a greater concentration of biologically active components, which enhances healing and collagen production.
  • PRP: Platelet-Rich Plasma is created by spinning blood in a centrifuge at high speeds to separate out plasma and platelets. The faster spin results in a clear layer of plasma that contains platelets, growth factors, and cytokines.

Key Difference: PRF retains more of the natural elements found in your blood, including white blood cells and fibrin, making it a more holistic and biologically active formulation compared to PRP.

2. Growth Factor Release:

  • PRF: PRF releases its growth factors gradually over time, thanks to the fibrin matrix that acts as a scaffold for the slow-release of platelets. This provides a more sustained effect, promoting longer-lasting results with fewer treatments.
  • PRP: The platelets in PRP release their growth factors quickly, offering an immediate boost in healing and rejuvenation. However, these effects are often short-lived, requiring more treatments to maintain results.

Key Difference: PRF provides a controlled and slower release of growth factors over a longer period of time, leading to extended benefits and more stable results in skin and hair rejuvenation.

3. Natural Components + Additives:

  • PRF: PRF is 100% natural, with no additives or anticoagulants. The absence of chemicals allows the fibrin to form a clot, which supports the natural healing process and encourages cellular regeneration in a more organic manner.
  • PRP: During the preparation of PRP, anticoagulants are added to your blood to prevent the blood from clotting. While this process enhances handling and application, it also theoretically reduces some of the natural healing properties of the plasma.

Key Difference: PRF’s all-natural composition enhances its regenerative properties and aligns closely with the bodyโ€™s own healing mechanisms, making it a more biocompatible option with less risk of allergy or hypersensitivity reactions. Without the added anti-coagulant, the PRF solution is more comfortable for the patient, compared to PRP.

4. Treatment Versatility:

  • PRF: PRF is considered a next-generation therapy that offers superior results, especially in delicate areas like the under-eyes and hairline making it an ideal option for aesthetic treatments. Its ability to stimulate collagen and elastin production, alongside gradual growth factor release, leads to improved texture, volume, and elasticity of the skin and improvement in hair quality and growth.
  • PRP: PRP has been widely used in both orthopedic, dental and aesthetic settings for decades. Itโ€™s effective for treating fine lines, wrinkles, and hair loss, but may require more sessions to achieve and maintain optimal results in the world of aesthetics.

Key Difference: PRF is generally seen as more effective in targeting specific concerns like dark circles, under-eye hollows, fine lines and thinning hair, offering a broader range of applications with longer-lasting outcomes for anti-aging purposes.

The Clear Winner…PRF!

Having offered both PRP and PRF services since 2012 in Portland, Oregon,ย  ย we know PRP and PRF are effective tools for restoring a more youthful appearance and providing the growth of healthier, stronger hair. However, for the reasons listed above, we believe PRF is the superior option, providing a better overall experience and longer-lasting results.

Schedule a consultation or procedure appointment with our aesthetics team to start your skin rejuvenation or hair restoration journey using our all natural approach with PRF.

โ˜€๏ธ Why we prefer mineral-based sunscreen over chem โ˜€๏ธ Why we prefer mineral-based sunscreen over chemical-based sunscreen.

Mineral > chemical, & hereโ€™s why:

Pros of Mineral-based sunscreen (zinc oxide + titanium dioxide).

โœ… Physically blocks UV rays instantly (no 20 min wait), unlike chemical sunscreen which need time to absorb
โœ… Gentler on sensitive & acne-prone skin. Less prone to build-up + skin reactions.
โœ… Itโ€™s broad-spectrum UVA/UVB coverage that doesnโ€™t break down in the sun, so doesnโ€™t need to be reapplied as often
โœ… Itโ€™s reef-safe & better for the environment

Flip the bottle & look for these active ingredients: ๐Ÿ” Zinc Oxide ๐Ÿ” Titanium Dioxide

If you see oxybenzone, avobenzone, octinoxate, or homosalate instead, youโ€™re looking at a chemical formula.

Take home message ๐Ÿ“ข

if youโ€™re able to be picky, choose mineral. But if chemical-based is the only option, any sunscreen beats no sunscreen when youโ€™re having fun in the sun. โ˜€๏ธ

โ˜€๏ธ Summer is here โ€” and so are summer injuries. Y โ˜€๏ธ Summer is here โ€” and so are summer injuries.

You finally are getting back to the activities you love the most: hiking, running, sports, gardening + more โ€” and then your body starts talking back.

Summer is one of the busiest seasons we see at FoRM, and itโ€™s not a coincidence. Ramping up activity after months of being more house-bound can add up to real strain on your joints, spine, tendons + muscles.

Here are the injuries we see most this season + why:

๐Ÿฆถ Ankle sprains & strains โ€” uneven terrain on a trail hike or run and a spontaneous soccer game + pickleball match, can really test your ankle stability.

๐Ÿฆต Runnerโ€™s Knee โ€” IT Band and patellar issues flare up as hikers, cyclists, and runners push their limits during the longer, sunnier days.

โš ๏ธ Achilles Injury- one of the more common Weekend Warrior injuries; sudden lunging + acceleration into a sprint, put more load than the Achilles can handle.

๐ŸŽพ Tennis & golferโ€™s elbow โ€” repetitive gripping + compounded overloading of the joint, inflame the tendons around the elbow

๐Ÿ’ช Rotator Cuff Injuries โ€” volleyball, tennis, and swimming put recurrent strain on the muscles and tendons that surround the shoulder joint.

๐ŸŒฟ Low back pain โ€” yard-work and weekend warrior activities that involve a lot of core strength and stability before your body is ready, can stress your spine.

๐Ÿ‘Ÿ Plantar fasciitis โ€” more time on your feet + unsupportive footwear = inflamed and stressed plantar fascia

The good news? Most of these are treatable โ€” and preventable.
